Volkstänzen or "Peoples' Dancing" is the broad term given to the dances performed by Trachten Vereins. There are three categories of Volkstänzen; Trachtentänze, Baüerliche Volkstänzen and Schuhplattler. These dances are part of the Bavarian heritage and are performed proudly by our group. Trachtentänze are dances that contain figures and sometimes tell a stroy. It is performed by a practiced group for an audience. Axes with a log or a pole with ribbons are props that can be used during a dance. Trachtentänze are relatively "young", most of which originated in the last 100-150 years. Baüerliche Volkstaenze, usually called Volkstänze, are meant to be performed by all ages regardless of ability to dance. Volkstänze are not performed FOR an audience; the audience IS the dance group. Schuhplattler dances changed with time. In the earliest dances men just improvised the Plattler. Later, they left the ladies out for "men only Plattlers". Finally by the mid 1800's the Plattlers were given a set pattern and were performed by a group for an audience.
